Caring For Your Candle
To safely enjoy your candles, here are some common care tips:
Before Lighting:
- Trim the Wick: Always trim your wick to 1/4 inch before each burn. A shorter wick creates a cleaner, brighter flame and prevents excessive soot and mushrooming. You can use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or even scissors.
- Clear the Area: Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from anything flammable. This includes curtains, bedding, carpets, books, paper, and clothing.
- Avoid Drafts: Don't place candles near open windows, fans, or air vents. Drafts can cause uneven burning, excessive flickering, and potential fire hazards.
- Supervise: Never leave a burning candle unattended.
While Burning:
- First Burn: On the first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the entire surface of the wax to melt evenly to the edges of the container. This prevents "tunneling" and ensures a longer-lasting candle. This can take several hours, depending on the candle size.
- Burn Time: Don't burn a candle for more than 3-4 hours at a time. Burning for too long can cause the wick to become unstable and create a larger flame, increasing the risk of the container overheating.
- Keep Free of Debris: Make sure no matches, wick trimmings, or other foreign objects are in the wax pool.
